Prostate
Health and you!
What is prostate health? Running 5 miles a day won't
ensure a healthy prostate. Neither will push-ups,
crunches, or any of the exercise machines you see on
TV.
My definition of prostate health is:
- Know what the prostate gland looks like, where
it is and what it does.
- Know the symptoms of prostate
problems.
- Know about the types of testing that
are performed.
- Know about the possible
diagnosis.
- Know what prostate treatments are
available for BPH or Prostate Cancer.
Prostate cancer is no longer the death
sentence it used to be for the American man. The disease
is well defined and well studied.
Early detection gives your doctor (and You!) more
treatment options. And new treatments are always being
developed.
There is no room for fear and embarrassment
when talking about your prostate. The locker room jokes
that you heard in your 20's aren't as funny as you hit 40.
Getting tested is crucial!
Risks factors for prostate disease include age and race.
African American men have the highest death rate of any ethnic
group. Reasearch is still ongoing but family history may
also be a factor.
Like many diseases, knowledge is power. There was a
time in history when there was no awareness of the prostate,
let alone diagnosis and treatment. Countless numbers of men
throughout the ages have suffered and died as a result of this
ignorance.
Permit me to share with you what I’ve learned about prostate
health and the prostate gland. It may save your life or the
life of a father, brother or friend.
